๐Ÿ›‘ Minute 1 - Two confusions and a fear.

In Steven Pressfield's classic, The War of Art, he introduces the idea of Resistance. The internal force keeps us from doing our most important creative work. Resistance takes many forms: an instinct, a bad habit, or an unsettling emotion. It's what gets in the way of you doing your most important work.

Everyone understands the idea of writer's block, the mental hurdle that cuts off ideas flowing from mind to paper. But these mental blocks are not picky. They will pester anyone.

  • The stay-at-home mom puts off starting a hobby due to self-doubt about balancing it with parenting responsibilities.
  • The young entrepreneur compares his current status with someone who has been in business for twenty years.
  • The church volunteer who feels insignificant and wonders if what they do is even making a difference in the grand scheme of things.

We could do something. We might do something. But we don't.

It's tempting to imagine Resistance as a moral failing, but it's more like stubbing your toe or burning the toast. We don't have to blame ourselves for where we are, but if we can see and name it, we can learn to dance with it.

Two confusions and a fear: The fear? Change. It's the fear of leaving comfort behind. Why embrace discomfort for change?

๐Ÿฃ Minute 2 - Overcome Resistance by breaking free from fear.

Let's dial in on change using the words of three authors who experienced their own mental blocks. They explain how caring, small steps, and personal growth are all part of making things better, just like an egg needing to hatch to grow.

โ€œUnless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. Itโ€™s not.โ€ โ€” Dr. Seuss
"And that is how change happens. One gesture. One person. One moment at a time." โ€• Libba Bray
โ€œWe are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.โ€ โ€” C.S. Lewis

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Minute 3 - Overcome Resistance by breaking free from these two confusions.

  • Confusion #1: doing nothing and doing something are choices.
  • Confusion #2: you can learn something better.

You want to develop what psychologists call a โ€œgrowth mindset,โ€ which is essentially the belief that one has a certain degree of personal influence over one's life. Contrast this with a โ€œfixed mindset,โ€ which is the belief that you have little to no control over your life.

No one else can heal your emotional wounds but you. No one else can fix your toxic relationship with money but you. No one else can lose that weight for you. No one else can make that person fall in love with you.

Weโ€™ve all been handed some major hurdles in life that are out of our control, but while you may not be to blame for your situation, you are always responsible for your situation.

Donโ€™t dwell. Itโ€™s time to do.
