🪞 Minute 1 - How to dispel the lies

In 2020, my wife and I fostered two young boys. They were a preamble to the two biological we love so dearly today. They prepared our hearts to hurt and love more than we thought possible.

The boys had various shifting sands in their short lives: sleeping in cars, missing weeks of school, and terrible diets if they were eating. Our home were a reprieve of normalcy. Whatever normal is supposed to be, hints of it can be found in a secure home with two parents. The boys had that for a year, and we had them.

How do you attempt to change the terrible circumstances encircling a person's life? You don't. You can't, not entirely. But you can help.

Every night, before we tucked away in our beds to read stories of living wardrobes and casting wizards, I would gather the boys in the bathroom. We would look into the sets of three eyes and say the mantra: "I'm smart. I'm strong. I can do hard things. I'm a boy of God." Every single night.

Why did those words matter? Because they made two little boys who often felt like nobody felt like somebody. In a rhythmic moment, it dispelled the lies of their circumstances and taught them a new soundtrack. 

The four best words in the entire Harry Potter series are, “You’re a wizard, Harry.” Why? Because those words made a nobody feel like somebody and that made everybody feel special.

🟡 Minute 2 - Another view.

💯 Minute 3 - Two actions to change it all.

I bet right now, you can think of someone who did that for you. What if today, you told them thank you? It doesn’t have to be complicated; you don’t have to get out a quill and a fancy piece of paper to create something elaborate. It can just be a text message.

Here is my 💯 guaranteed: no one will respond, “Today was the worst day for you to send this to me.”

  • Action one I would love you to take is to thank someone who gave you a new soundtrack. The person who told you something that has stuck and changed your life.
  • Action two is to do the same for someone else.

You could tell a friend, “You’re a great mom. Whenever I’m with you, it inspires me to be a great mom, too!” That will take you thirty seconds, but that friend is going to remember it for the rest of the day.

I also guarantee you have at least one friend who isn’t feeling like a great mom today. Text them.

You could tell someone any of the following:

  • “You’re a great boss.”
  • “You’re a great friend.”
  • “You’re a great counselor.”
  • “You’re a great writer.”
  • “You’re a great leader.”
  • “You’re a great worker.”

Tell someone today.
