📚 Minute 1 -

I love books. Some of my earliest memories with my grandma were of me reading to her while taking long trips in the car. I was Audible before Dan Katz ever got his hands on that ball. I would choose reading over video games or late nights with friends in my preteens. This made me really popular in school.

I wrote my first "book" when I was 10. It was titled "Mancala" because that was a board game I was really into at the time. The name had nothing to do with the book, but the book had everything to do with my life. It was a short story about a neglected boy who made the most unlikely friends. I even drew pictures of all the main characters and read the text out loud for my invisible audience.

Some kids dreamed of fast cars; others daydreamed about their first kiss. I likely had similar fantasies, but the driving one was to one day see my name written on the spine of a book. Like an actual book, studied, written, edited, and printed for my sweaty palms to hold like a sacred emblem.

That dream became a reality all because of a little word: courage. I finished a book because I have the courage to write it, put it under scrutiny, and publish it for others to read. Imagine what you could do with a little more courage!

💡
A courageous person makes scary choices in a particular situation that seems worth fighting for. They do this even if their mind gives them lots of reasons why it might be a bad idea.

🐦‍⬛ Minute 2 - See it through no matter what.

The skill of courage thus consists largely in developing your capacity to manage your fear. Here is a quote from one of my favorite books growing up about the difference between courage and recklessness.

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” ― Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

🚨 Minute 3 - 6 steps for more courage today.

Courage is a universally admired quality. It is has been celebrated in every culture in the world, in every age. It’s one of the four “tactical virtues” of masculinity.

And it serves as not only the foundation of human excellence, but of every type of it, for as Winston Churchill observed: “Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities . . . because it is the quality which guarantees all others.”

So where do we begin today? Stretch the muscle in 6 steps.

  1. Acknowledge your fear and buddy up.
  2. Do reconnaissance to remove aspects of the unknown.
  3. Embrace discomfort; fear sucks for everyone.
  4. Make bravery a habit.
  5. Exercise 20 seconds of insane courage.
  6. Ditch perfectionism.
