Minute 1 - The most important lesson our family teaches us.

The most important thing family teaches you is how to actively love someone who you don't always like.

There is a deep bond of love we share with our family—one that goes deeper than accepting everything they say or desiring to be around them all the time. As Christians, this is the universal love we are told to have for others.

What if you simply tried to be around someone this holiday season without trying to change them or control the interaction? Bonus points if they are not family.

💡
As Christians, we don’t wait for someone to show themselves to be lovable or worthy of our love; rather, Christian love is initiative.

Minute 2 - How to be a universally more loving person.

Author and Pastor Timothy Keller on Christian love,

“We instinctively tend to limit for whom we exert ourselves. We do it for people like us, and for people whom we like. Jesus will have none of that. By depicting a Samaritan helping a Jew, Jesus could not have found a more forceful way to say that anyone at all in need - regardless of race, politics, class, and religion - is your neighbour. Not everyone is your brother or sister in faith, but everyone is your neighbour, and you must love your neighbour.”

Minute 3 - The more you practice, the easier it becomes to love universally.

  • Challenge: Choose someone this week (family or not) who you don't always see eye-to-eye with. Spend time with them with the intention of simply understanding their perspective without trying to change them. Practice active listening and ask open-ended questions.
  • Bonus: Write a reflection about the experience, focusing on what you learned and how it might change your approach to relationships in the future.
