Welcome to the Odd Verse of the Day series.

Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God's Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don't know how or what to pray, it doesn't matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. - Romans 8:26 (MSG)

This verse is such a treat to sit on and ponder.

Paul is saying it plainly if you don't know what to pray, if the words are not coming to you right away, or if you feel paralyzed by grief or confusion.

It's okay.

What's the context of Romans 8?

Romans 8 is one of the most loved chapters in all of Scripture. Paul begins and ends this passage with statements about the absolute security of those who are in Christ.

  • First, there is no condemnation at all for those in Christ.
  • Last, nothing will ever be able to separate us from God's love for us in Christ.

Why does this matter?

The themes of suffering and hope dominate this chapter, and I cannot think of something more relevant today. When our pain or lack of hope swallows us, we are often left speechless.

Thanks to the "helper" left behind, it doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter if we remain speechless; the Spirit of God will take our groanings and lay them before God's feet on our behalf.

Stop talking.

It's in my nature to talk.

I am a verbal processor, and I often speak before thinking. I take this same approach in my conversations with God. This is my reminder that it is okay to simply not have words, to hurt in silence, to question and to stop talking.

Let's pray about that.

Father, by the power of the Spirit, you are present with us even in the darkest valleys of our souls. Even in our wordless suffering, you hear our heart's groanings. You are a God who listens. Amen.

Today's verse comes from my video series, Roll For Verse. In this series, I roll dice to pick a random Bible verse each day. Then, I spent a few minutes sharing devotional thoughts on the verse. If you'd like to join the fun and explore the Bible differently, come check us out on TikTok or YouTube.

@pastor.payton Episode 4 of Roll for Verse takes us to how to pray wheb we don’t have the words.
