Welcome to the Odd Verse of the Day series.

And if some bullying Assyrian shows up,
invades and violates our land, don’t worry.
We’ll put him in his place, send him packing,
    and watch his every move.
Shepherd-rule will extend as far as needed,
to Assyria and all other Nimrod-bullies.
Our shepherd-ruler will save us from old or new enemies,
from anyone who invades or violates our land. - Micah 5:5-6 MSG

It's not the typical verse of the day, but it's important nonetheless.

Let's start with the context.

Micah is a prophet and a spokesperson on behalf of God.

Following the pattern of the previous prophets, Micah blended near and distant ages in his prophecy. The threat of the Assyrians would come against both kingdoms (north and south Israel) shortly, but Micah also used the idea of the Assyrians for any pagan nation or empire set against God's people.

Like a placeholder, where you see Assyria, plug in any other enemy nation.

Though the enemies of God's people would come against them, leaders would raise mighty men against them under God's blessing.

God often works this way to deliver us from our enemies.

The promise of a shepherd.

God's people are but a remnant, a small number compared to the many left to perish, a little flock; but they are the remnant of Jacob, a people in covenant with God, and his favor.

And God will send a shepherd to bring the flock together for protection, comfort, and deliverance. This shepherd will be born in the small town of Bethlehem and will be victorious over God's enemies for all people.

It's quite a promise.

Today's takeaway.

We have the vantage point in our part of the story to know this is a reference to Jesus. The people in Micah had no concept of Jesus. We do.

The question becomes, how do you leverage that?

Because you can and you should.

Jesus was promised long before he was born, and he accomplished everything he set out to accomplish, including conquering death itself. Knowing that should change something for us.

He is a good shepherd. We listen for his voice and follow. He cares for our scrapes and scares. He protects us from wolves and lions that want to drag us away. He is good. He is loving. He is searching for you.

Today's verse comes from my video series, Roll For Verse. In this series, I roll dice to pick a random Bible verse each day. Then, I spend a few minutes sharing devotional thoughts on the verse. If you'd like to join the fun and study the Bible in a new way, check it out on TikTok or YouTube.
