Welcome to the Odd Verse of the Day series.

But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil hearts. So I brought on them all the curses of the covenant I had commanded them to follow but that they did not keep. - Jeremiah 11:8

The Book of Jeremiah is the longest in the Bible (33,000+ words) and can be intimidating to many. Today, we are just looking at one random verse.

Let's start with the context.

Jeremiah was known as "the weeping prophet."

It sounds like a lame name to be remembered by, but it was because of his passion for his prophecies. His words hit you on the inside, and you get to know his personality much better than any of the other prophets.

Most of the book is about destruction and judgment that was to come to Judah and the surrounding nations for remaining unrepentant.

Same story; different prophet.

Are you good?

We like to think so about ourselves, don't we?

Sure, we have our flaws. We get the idea that nobody is perfect while simultaneously living and thinking like nothing is wrong. We are stubborn.

We have a tendency to determine what is good and wise. We allow everyone to choose for themselves what is good. Still, we backhand a person for not defining goodness by our own definition.

Timothy Keller calls this "intellectual schizophrenia." And this is the battle of the Bible. This is the battle of our odd verse. There is a tension between what I want and what God wants.

Today's takeaway.

Which will you listen to?

Today's verse comes from my video series, Roll For Verse. In this series, I roll dice to pick a random Bible verse each day. Then, I spent a few minutes sharing devotional thoughts on the verse. If you'd like to join the fun and study the Bible in a new way, check it out on TikTok or YouTube.

@pastor.payton Episode 8 of Roll for Verse takes us to broken covenants that still apply to me.
