Welcome to the Odd Verse of the Day series.

I went in response to a revelation and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race in vain. - Galatians 2:2

A lot is happening here.

Let's start with the context.

Paul, the author of Galatians, is writing this letter to the new Christian church in Galatia. In this verse, Paul recalls a trip to Jerusalem, which may have occurred around AD 45.

He traveled there from Antioch in Syria with Barnabas, a Jewish Christian, and Titus, a Gentile Christian. He mentions that he went to Jerusalem because of a revelation.

Paul is a converted Jewish leader. After meeting the resurrected Jesus, he switches from the dark side to the light side. Once a persecutor of Christian churches, he is now a planter and promoter of them. You can imagine the tension.

  • Jews don't like him because he preaches about a Messianic Jesus.
  • Gentiles don't like him because he came from the Jewish leadership, which despises the Gentiles.
  • Christian Jews don't like him because he doesn't require the Christian Gentiles to observe Jewish practices to absorb the faith.
  • Gentile Christians don't like him because he makes them hang out with Jewish Christians.

It's a mess. It's like my family reunions on Thanksgiving.

Paul's race.

Paul mentions a race he is running. This is an excellent analogy for life. Paul is fighting for unity; all the people must come together under the banner of the gospel.

The same gospel Paul preaches to the Gentiles is the one he preaches to the Jews, Greeks, Cretes, and Atheists. And he will persevere in preaching this message to the very end.

Today's takeaway

God cares less about the church you attend, the Bible translation you read, or the number of Christian tattoos you have on your body than he does about your willingness to unify the body of Christ.

There are a lot of reasons why we divide.

Some are good reasons. Most are not.

The gospel gives us a reason to come together with people unlike us. Let that be a race we run until we cross the finish line.

Today's verse comes from my video series, Roll For Verse. In this series, I roll dice to pick a random Bible verse each day. Then, I spend a few minutes sharing devotional thoughts on the verse. If you'd like to join the fun and study the Bible in a new way, check it out on TikTok or YouTube.

@pastor.payton Episode 15 of Roll for Verse takes us to the importance of unity and bringing all people under Jesus.
