How Christian men win the war of pornography.

How Christian men win the war of pornography.

I was exposed to pornography when I was 7 years old.

The memory is burned into my brain.

So is the shame I felt that nobody had to teach me to feel. I took the photos (likely hidden away by my older brother) and tucked them away into my own hiding place.

I wasn't old enough to know what to do with them but gaze in curiosity.

I became a statistic that day.

The stats are scary πŸ™ˆ

  • The average age for a child to view porn is 11 years old.
  • 93% of boys and 63% of girls have seen explicit content before turning 18.
  • 70% of boys have spent more than 30 minutes searching for porn online.
  • 35% of boys have searched for porn more than 10 times overall.
  • Only 3% of boys and 17% of girls have not been exposed to adult content.

Becoming Godly men of discipline

There is a war raging in the hearts of every Godly man.

Godly men must fight hard to stay pure in a world full of sexual images and desires.

The pervasive war of pornography hits at the heart of a young person's life, breaking relationships, destroying self-esteem, and tearing apart their faith.

My goal in this article is to help and encourage guys who want to fight back against the harmful effects of porn. By learning how impurity sneaks up on us and committing to a disciplined life of purity, we can take back the identities God gave us.

How something gets dirty

Chances are you will not wake up tomorrow free from the grip of pornography. If so, you'd done it already because you feel the negative pull it has on your life.

Instead, it will take a reversal of the dismal spin guys find themselves in from a young age.

The process looks something like this πŸ‘‡

πŸ”₯ Desensitization: Exposure to explicit material over time is the first step toward impurity. What used to shock us becomes normal over time, dulling our moral compass and making us less aware of our actions' seriousness.

😌 Relaxation: As numbness takes hold, we become more likely to lower our standards and give up on what we believe in. We sometimes let our guard down and do things we know are wrong even though they go against everything we stand for.

πŸ‘€ Fixation: When you rest, you get stuck on one thing. Our thoughts fill up with dreams and wants, and we can't stop thinking about the next time we can get what we want. We get stuck in a loop of bad behavior that only worsens over time.

🧠 Rationalization: We do this to make us feel less guilty and ashamed. We tell ourselves that what we're doing is harmless, that everyone else does it, or that it's what our natural needs need. Rationalization dulls our sense of right and wrong and makes us miss the harmful effects.

The spiral only goes down πŸŒ€

As impurity worsens, it leads to a downward spiral that makes us commit more important sins like adultery, lying, and even murder of the heart. The destructive effects go beyond our own lives. They spread to our relationships and hurt our reputations as Godly men.

πŸ’‘
1 John 2:16 For everything in the worldβ€”the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of lifeβ€”comes not from the Father but from the world.

This is years and years of indoctrination of the heart.

  • Subtly glances at girls our age.
  • Lies and secrecy of images our eyes desire.
  • Convincing ourselves over and over again it's what we need.
  • De-humanizing others for our pleasure.

How do we break the cycle and live a pure life with discipline? Not easily, but with work and sweat like any other form of discipline.

How to Live a Pure Life with Discipline

Accountability: You should find a trusted friend or mentor who can give you support, encouragement, and gentle correction because you know responsibility is essential. Share your problems and successes often to create an environment where people can be honest and open.

Prayer: Start praying often and ask God for help, strength, and forgiveness. Pray to be freed from evil thoughts and temptations, and ask the Holy Spirit to clean and refresh your mind.

Memorization: Spend time in God's Word by learning it by heart and thinking about it. "I have hidden your word in my heart so I wouldn't sin against you," the poet says (Psalm 119:11). Scripture is a potent weapon against impurity because it gives us knowledge, strength, and the ability to see right from wrong.

Mind Discipline:

  1. Watch for your mind and be careful about what you let in.
  2. Replace bad media habits with material that helps you grow and aligns with biblical principles.
  3. Make it a habit to fill your mind with God's truth and actively push away bad ideas.

Healthy Boundaries: Set clear limits that keep your heart and mind safe. This could mean limiting your time on the internet, staying away from places that trigger you, and choosing the people you hang out with care. Surround yourself with people who will help you stay pure and avoid events that could make you lose your purity.

πŸ’‘
You are the sum total of the people you spend the most time with. Take a look around. Proverbs 13:20 - Keep company with the wise and you will become wise. If you make friends with stupid people, you will be ruined.

Face reality:

  1. Don't try to hide from the effects of sin.
  2. Recognize how much pain it has caused you and other people.
  3. Realize that beating porn is not something you can do in one day; it's a journey you'll be on for the rest of your life.
  4. Accept that you have flaws and weaknesses, and look to God's grace to help you heal and grow.

How to Use It and the Bottom Line

God has repeatedly told us how important it is to live a pure life.

He wants us men to do something right now, not tomorrow or next week.

Take a moment to think about what struck you most about this post. Was it the process of becoming impure, the call to discipline, or the message of God's grace?

Talk to God right now about it. Pour your feelings, tell Him about your struggles, and let His power change your life.

By practicing purity, we can win the war against porn, which wants to destroy our lives. Let's stand together, supporting and encouraging each other as we try to live in a way that praises God and shows His righteous character.

As good men, we can work together to reclaim our identities, fix broken relationships, and become lights in a world that desperately needs it.
