Minute 1 - Is a wolf a "dog"?

The answer to this question reveals the fascinating connection between cognitive psychology and faith.

In cognitive psychology, "concepts" are categories we use to organize our experiences and ideas. For example, a "dog" is a concept we understand through definitions and family resemblances.

A German Shepherd is clearly a dog. Check.

But what about a wolf? It sort of fits, but it doesn't quite feel right.

Similarly, "emotional support animal" typically brings to mind cats and dogs. We wouldn't mind if someone brought a cute, furry, domesticated cat or dog on the plane to support them.

But what if someone brought their emotional support snake? If you have seen the movie, you know snakes should never be on a plane.

This way of organizing and categorizing can also help us understand aspects of faith.

Minute 2 - A dash of Christian mysticism.

Author and Professor of Psychology at Abilene Christian University, Richard Beck, in his "Cognition and Learning" class, touches on a profound insight from Christian mysticism,

"God belongs to no genus. God is a member of no class or category. God transcends all concepts."

This means God cannot be confined to any category or concept. God's existence is fundamentally different from everything else. God is the existence that gives rise to all existence.

Minute 3 -  God does not exist.

By this I mean, of course, that God doesn't exist the way objects exist, the way dogs or planets exist. God isn't a noun. God isn't a being among beings.

Human concepts and categories are limited. When thinking about God, we have to try to move beyond rigid definitions and embrace the mystery and transcendence of the divine.

God is not real in the way we understand reality because it is from him that very reality was created. It's mind-bending at times, which is why the invitation is not to understand it, but to stand in awe and wonder of it.
